Webpage Title and Keyword Tags
One of the things I see often when asked to analyze a website for SEO purposes is that they have used the same title tag for every page in their website.
Important note to remember: Search Engines crawl and index webpages, not websites.
Every webpage in your website should be a standalone unique page. It should have its own title tag, description, and keywords that reflect what is actually found on that page.
The title tag is not a keyword tag. Stuffing your title with 20 keywords will not make you more relevant for those keywords.
For every page of your website, choose ONE major key phrase and two or three minor keywords or phrases. Write your text with only those phrases in mind. Don’t spam them throughout the page. Make it readable. Your visitors come first.
Then title that page with your major key phrase. Use the minor key phrases in the keywords tag. Easy.
Some people seem to think that the keywords metatag is where you put all the keywords and phrases you WANT the search engines to index you high in the results for. NO. It needs to include keywords and phrases that are actually on the page in the text or they do you no good at all.
Many think the description tag is another keyword tag. It isn’t. Yes you can add some keywords to it, but it is the description that your potential customers see below your link in the search engine results. Its a marketing tool. Make it something that when it gets read the person wants to click your link to learn more. Getting a good result in a search engine does you absolutely no good if people don’t click the link.
Those are just some basics for you pros out there, but a lot of people don’t seem to know this. I welcome your comments and tips. If you disagree, comment. Lets discuss it. Who knows what we might learn.
