Google Sets The Rules For Links, But There Are Many Creative Ways To Work Within The Rules

It is Google’s fault actually. No one can be blamed for this matter more than Google itself.

Google came up with a brilliant plan for determining the best web pages to show in their search engine results. And then without telling us the intimate details of their plan, they told us about part of their algorithm by explaining the importance of inbound links — the Google PageRank (PR) system — in their calculations.

Google itself planted the seeds of its own future headaches. Nobody did it to them; they did it themselves.

The author of this article is talking about Google’s link policy. He brings up some good points. Mainly, how does Google determine “intent?”

Google’s policy states that it will penalize sites that buy links. But how does Google know if you are buying links? If you don’t tell them and the seller doesn’t tell them, how do they know? The issue is, they don’t know. They guess. What happens is, they judge intent based on how the links appear on the website. If the links are on a website with hundreds of other links, Google determines that those are paid links. So webmasters all over the web are busy trying to make all their links look natural - whether paid for or not. Here are some suggested ways to build links for your website:

  1. Exchange links with like websites
  2. Engage in article marketing
  3. List in directories
  4. Register at free websites that allow it
  5. Have more than one website and use one to point to the other
  6. Join forums and discussion boards and post messages that provide value to the discussions
  7. Leave comments on blogs
  8. If you have a blog, trackback to other blogs
  9. Use your blog to link to your website (every post is a separate page)
  10. Submit testimonials to companies with similar products or services to yours
  11. Social networking and bookmarking
  12. Link baiting - the practice of putting something of value on your website to encourage links
  13. Online press releases
  14. Purchase website advertising
  15. Buy link placements on websites

Try thinking of some on your own. There are plenty of ways to get links to your website.
