Plan Your Move Before You Make A Domain Name Switchover
Do not switch your domain unless you have no other choice because no matter how popular your website is domain switchovers are far from enjoyable. After all, even losing a single week of significant traffic for a popular site could cost many thousands or even millions of dollars. On the flip side of the coin, less trafficked websites (i.e. Mom and Pop sites, small B2C websites, etc.) usually experience a longer wait time so they experience a different type of pain. Fortunately, you now know there are ways to mitigate the potential harm to your bottom line, just don’t forget to follow the rules and your switchover will be a lot more effective and ultimately less painful.
You can prevent the need for a domain switchover by choosing the right domain name to begin with. Anything other than .com and .org is going to be second rate. If you buy all the possibilities (.com, .net, .org, etc.) and redirect them all to your .com domain then you’ll fair a lot better.
If you do find yourself needing to make a domain name transfer be sure you do all your planning before you make the move. It can be very costly. Purchasing the domain name can itself be costly. Plan your budget, plan your website, make the changes that are necessary and be sure to notify as many of your visitors as possible. If you have a blog, announce it on your blog. Announce it in your newsletter. Make the announcement on each page of your website several weeks in advance of the move and keep it there until the move is complete. Also, if you have a customer opt-in list, send out several notices letting your customers know before - and after - the move.
