Social Media Optimization Provides Benefits Communally
Social Media Optimization is here to stay. But what is it?
Don’t be fooled by the name. Somewhat like search engine optimization, there is an art and a science. However, there are some differences.
Social media involves a number of activities that encourage interactive dialogue among members of a community. It could be blogging, forum posting, podcasting or syndicating any content on your website. It could, and often does, also include social networking on sites like MySpace and YouTube.
There are several ways of going about social media optimization. The three most popular, and probably most important, ways are
- Tagging;
- Syndicating; and
- Networking
Tagging is simply putting a list of keywords in a specified location on your web pages, blog posts or other content you want to optimize for the social media sites. Tags are just like keywords. In fact, if you take your list of keywords and visit sites like Digg, Technorati, Flickr and YouTube, you can perform searches for those keywords and find articles, blog posts and other media that uses those keywords for their social tags. By implementing the same strategy for your content you can get involved in social media marketing.
Syndication is the act of letting other users put your content to use through a technology called RSS. You can syndicate any content but you have to have the right tools. RSS feeds allow users to view summaries of your content and choose which ones they want to subscribe to. You place an icon on your website or blog to let users know which RSS feed they can use to subscribe to your content. Some of the most popular ones are Feedburner, My Yahoo, My Google, Digg, del.icio.us, Technorati and there are literally hundreds more. Make your content available to at least half a dozen of the more popular ones.
Networking has always been around in fashion or another. Online, it takes place in forums, on blogs and on special websites devoted entirely to the practice. These sites include MySpace, Facebook and several others. You set up a profile, visit other networking pages and invite people to be your friends then you can blog to them, send them bulletins and offer content to your network through those sites or link to your website outside of the network to drive traffic.
All of these methods are effective if you use them correctly. Social media optimization is the practice of optimizing your content so that social media users can find it easily and put it to their good use, which is also to your good use. Don’t be afraid it. Embrace it.
