Keyword Research Is About Profitability
One of the biggest mistakes new Internet marketers make is in the first step of the SEO process: Keyword research.
Proper keyword research requires that you find all the profitable possibilities for your keyword searches. Many new Internet marketers will conduct a keyword search and find two dozen keywords, or they’ll find more and throw out the least searched for terms. This is a huge mistake.
A search term that receives a high number of searches is likely to be less profitable due to the competitive playing field. If you have thousands of websites competing for the same search term, the chances of you moving to the top 10 in search engine rankings is very slim. Keep in mind that most of those websites have been around awhile. They have a firm foothold in the search marketplace and in order for you to nudge your way in you’ll have to outdo them in every area of SEO. Getting started later doesn’t fare in your favor. It will be a long time before you move into the top 10, if at all.
On the other hand, if there is a related search term where few people are competing yet there is a substantial number of people searching for that term, you stand a much greater chance of appearing on page 1 of search results even with mediocre SEO. For instance, let’s suppose you discovered that 2,500 last month searched for “blue two-pronged widgets” but that 350,000 people searched for “widgets.” Which is more profitable?
Go to each search engine and perform a search for those terms yourself. At the top of the page on each search engine you’ll see how many results appear for that search term. Search for each phrase with and without quotation marks. Suppose that there are only 2,500 search results for “blue two-pronged widgets” but that there are 2,000,000 results for “widgets.” Note the correlation of search results to number of searches for each term. A 1:1 ration is certainly a lot better than .175:1. Your chances of turning “blue two-pronged widgets” into a profit is much greater than it is with “widgets.”
The more related keywords you find to the main search term, “widgets,” the more likely you are to find profitable keywords. Don’t just look for the top 20 or 30 searched for terms. Uncover every possible term that you can and analyze each one for profitability. Then pick your top 50 most profitable keyword variations and start with those.
Keyword research is not about numbers. It’s about profitability. Don’t forget that.
