Podcasts: Can You SEO Them?

The obvious answer is yes. But is it the real answer? There are some challenges to SEOing your podcasts, but it can be done.

First, no matter what format you come up with for your audio file, you need to give your podcast a name. Don’t just give it any name. Think of a creative and interesting name that uses a highly valued keyword. Something that people would search for in the search engines.

You’ll also want your podcast to have good ID3 tags. The major search engines don’t support them now but they will. However, there are specialty or podcast search engines that do support them and it’s just a matter of time before Google and Yahoo get on the bandwagon. Make sure your ID3 tags have the relevant keywords in them as well. Think of these as the equivalent of your social bookmarking tags. That’s what they are and they make great SEO tools.

Alongside your podcast, include a keyword-rich synopsis of the podcast. Don’t give away the story, but do provide enough information that your site visitors will understand what the podcast is about and the search engines will crawl the text in search for important keywords. Hint: One sentence isn’t enough. Pretend like you are synopsizing and article for an article directory.

Submit your podcast to podcast directories.

Place a transcript of an excerpt of your blog on a separate web page, or website even, and link to the podcast from that transcript using an important keyword as anchor text.

Link to your podcast from your website, your blog, your newsletter and anywhere else you promote yourself from. Those inbound links, especially if they are anchor text using keywords associated with the podcast, will benefit you in the search engines.

Encourage others to link to your podcast, but also to any online promotions of your podcast such as blogs, press releases, etc. Provide them with suggested anchor text or keyword-rich phrasing for those links.

Notify bloggers and other media in your industry that you have a podcast and provide them with suggested links and keyword-rich anchor text for linking to it.

Interview an expert in your industry who has a website with a high PageRank and interview that person for your podcast. Because they are the subject of the interview they will likely link to the podcast from their website.

Sell advertising or take sponsors of the podcast and provide those sponsors with suggested keyword-rich anchor text to link too the podcast from their websites. Chances are they will do it.
