True SEOs Don’t Attend Conferences
I’m here at the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco. Today (actually yesterday now that it’s after midnight) I sat in on the SEO Workshop being presented by Todd Friesen (”The Oilman”) and Greg Boser (”WebGuerrilla”).This session turned out to be a lot of fun. It was reminiscent of their “SEO Rock Stars” radio show on Webmaster Radio. I cracked up when Todd plugged their show and explained the name of the show by saying: “Yes, we really are that arrogant.”
Really now. What’s the big deal about a Web 2.0 conference? True SEOs wouldn’t attend such a conference. They’d be at home, or the office - maybe even the home office - practicing SEO. And who the heck is going to listen to a self-described “reformed black hat SEO” advocating black hat, or “gray hat,” techniques? It just doesn’t make sense.
If you’re tempted to attend a conference on SEO, especially if you are asked to pay money, don’t do it. You’re better off reading Google’s guidelines and operating within them. It’s not that you should be afraid of running afoul of the search engines, but that you should be concerned with helping searchers find the information they are looking for. That’s what the guidelines are designed to help you do. Don’t spoil it for yourself. Just do the right thing.
