The Search Engine You Focus Most On Should Refect Your Target Market
1. Google Is God!Only half-kidding but at least where targeted traffic is concerned, Google is still the all important being you should be worshipping online. Don’t ignore the other two major demigods Yahoo! and MSN, but Google will deliver most of your traffic. Your website stats will point this out to you daily, so you must optimize your site for Google.
As a general rule make your pages Google friendly by only using one topic per page, include your keywords in the title, meta description and url for that page. It would also be helpful to have your main keywords in the first headline on the page and most experienced webmasters try to place their keywords in the first 90 words and in the last 25 words. Sprinkle your keywords and variations throughout the copy but don’t keyword spam, just let the engines know this is what your page is about.
It may seem like conventional wisdom to put all your eggs in the Google basket but don’t. Google may be the source of most traffic on the web, but it isn’t the source of all traffic. And remember, Yahoo is the most trafficked website on the web. That means you have a lot more potential for unique visitors with Yahoo than with Google. But it doesn’t really matter who has the most traffic or who sends the most traffic conglomerately. What matters is what is right for you.
Search engine optimization is about getting results from all of the search engines. Learn what each search engine likes and don’t like. That will help you in the long run.
For instance, if you have a blog on your website and you link back to your main content pages from the blog, Yahoo will credit you with inbound links; Google will not. In fact, Google has the strictest policy regarding inbound links among all the search engines. This could lead to greater results from Yahoo and MSN for your particular product.
If you do business with tech-savvy Net denizens then it makes sense to focus heavily on Google. But if your business is designed to target people who do not use the Internet often or who are new to the Internet then Yahoo and MSN will likely give you better results. Another search engine that seems to be gaining more share of the search market is Ask.com. It was just a few short months ago that Ask knocked AOL out of fourth place. Some experts and expecting them to move past MSN and possibly even Yahoo some time this year or next.
No matter which search engine is top dog - or God if you will - the primary concern for you should be where does your target market hang out? Are they Yahooligans? If so, all the Google juice in the world isn’t going to help you much. And if they frequent Google more than any other search engine then it makes sense to target Google. Bottom line: You have to know your customer. Do you?
