AdSense Publishers May Lose Revenue If Ads Appear Too Close To Interactive Features
A lot of people are building websites around Google AdSense and hoping to make a lot of money. There’s nothing wrong with that. But Google has been wrestling with a pay-per-click problem in the last few years that has been aptly named Click Fraud. It has nothing to do with legitimate business but legitimate websites could be affected nonetheless. If you do manage an AdSense website, you should pay attention to Google’s latest warning:
Some implementations that could lead to accidental clicks include placing your ads:
- In close proximity to Macromedia Flash games
- Under pop-ups or download prompts
- Near site navigation controls on your pages, such as drop-downs or menu linksGenerally, we ask that you not place your ads near features of your site that your users may interact with by clicking. If your site contains elements that increase the number of ad clicks without increasing business results for the advertiser, we may consider these clicks to be invalid.
So what does this mean exactly? Well, if you have an AdSense website and your AdSense ads are sitting close to interactive website features that could cause your site visitors to click on those ads instead of the interactive features of your website then you may be in danger of losing ALL revenue from those ads even if some of them are legitimate click throughs. Is that fair? Maybe, maybe not. But you’ve been forewarned. The lesson here is play it safe. If you do have AdSense ads close to those interactive features then you’d better move them before you start losing revenue.
