Some Useful Tips On Improving Your Web Pages

If you’ve got a website and you’re having trouble figuring out how to improve it maybe these tips will help. The first thing you should do is look at your text. Is it well written? If not, you might try hiring a content provider to assist you. If that is over your budget then take a look at your own content and be sure you

  • Spell things correctly
  • Check your grammar
  • Use short sentences and paragraphs
  • Don’t ramble
  • Write in a natural voice

Next, look at the graphics. One of the biggest mistakes new webmasters make is including too many graphics on the page. When a visitor arrives on your page their eyes start at the top left corner then move horizontally and vertically down the page. Be sure your graphics are appealing and do not detract from the text. If you use graphics, they should enhance the page. If they are distracting or annoying then take them out.

On the Internet less is more. Don’t clutter your page with useless information. Keep it simple.

Use fonts that are easy to read. Sans serif fonts are best. Arial is popular for body text and Verdana is excellent for headlines and subheads.

Speaking of subheads, use them. They break up long text into shorter, smaller sections. People online don’t like to read a lot. Make it easy for them to scan the page.

Don’t use wacky backgrounds. Just use plain white or an off color. Nothing bold. And use black text only. For business, black on white is always best. The only exception should be when you want to emphasize an important word or phrase - and this should be done minimally. In that case you can bold the word or phrase or change its color. Red is the best color for this.

Finally, if you’re making people scroll left to right, stop it right now. Web users hate that. Some downward scrolling is OK if necessary but for the most part people don’t want to scroll. If you have a lot of text, consider using multiple pages.
