Have You Done Your Initial Competition Research?

Have you checked on your competitors lately? If not, you should. It could be a very valuable way to learn how to climb the search engine ladder.

Competitor research is one of the most important parts of search engine optimization. Before you do anything – build a website, perform keyword research, or even brainstorm for keywords – you should look at your key competitors. What are they doing?

Of course, the question must be asked, Who is a competitor? Good question. A competitor, in a word, is anyone seeking a ranking for the same keywords you are. If you haven’t done any keyword research how can you research competitors? Again, good question. You do know basically what industry you are in, don’t you? I mean, an auto mechanic won’t be researching leather-bound books, and vice versa. So you have a general idea.

Do your competitor research by typing in a keyword that you would look for if you were looking for your type of business. What do you find? Take a look at the first couple of pages of results and see what shows up. Click on the links and look at the websites of the results that appear. If you find a website that looks pretty close to what you want to do, right click and View Source. Write down the keywords you see in the meta tags. Use these keywords as a starting point for the rest of your research. You’ll do more competitor research later. But for now, that should be a good start.
