Will Google Universal Change The Way SEO Is Done?

It’s unclear just how Google Universal will change the landscape of search, but there has been a lot of speculation. Most SEOs are saying that vertical search will become more important as a result of the new changes in Google’s search methodology. But will it?

It depends on how you look at it.

First, Google Universal is an attempt to incorporate all of Google’s vertical search platforms into one product. When a searcher goes to Google.com and enter a two or three word search term, Google Universal will include results for news, videos, images, and blogs in addition to what it normally would have included. The question is, will that be better for searchers?

The upside is that all the search results should be relevant and up to date. You should not find outdated information with Google Universal. That’s because Google will no longer simply return web pages so your top 10 results will be more relevant to the terms you use. The downside is you might not be looking for blog posts, videos, or news, in which case some of the top 10 results may not be relevant to what you are looking for. Is that bad?

It is likely that searchers will have to learn to narrow down their searches even more. If you are looking specifically for a blog then you’ll include the term “blog” with your keyword term. If you want images only you should include “images” in your search query. If you’re not concerned about whether you get videos or images in your results then do nothing.

An even bigger question is how will Google Universal change the way SEO is done. Well, for serious SEOs it might not change much. But for the DIY SEO it will have to change or you will suffer at the mercy of the search engines. For instance, if you write a blog and you are not currently SEOing your blog posts, your blog may never get found. Before, if you wrote a blog and it was half-assed SEOd then you could expect to be found for the casual keyword search. Google Universal makes it all the more imperative to SEO your blog posts, images, videos, and everything else.
