Google Universal Optimization Strategies

You’ve no doubt heard about Google Universal by now. This is Google’s latest attempt to improve its search results. Essentially, Google is taking all the information from its vertical search categories and including them all in one SERP page. In other words, if you search for bananas then you’ll receive search results from Google Blog Search, Google Video, Google Images, Google Photos, Google Local, Google Maps, and the umpteen other Google verticals.

What this means for SEOs is that you’ll need to optimize your web pages for as many of the vertical searches as possible in order to increase your chances of being found through Google Universal. You’ll still need to SEO your pages the same way - using keywords, link strategies, and meta tags. But you’ll need to do it through the verticals as much as possible.

If you have a blog, for instance, you’ll want to include as many elements as you can in your blog - videos, photos, etc. But you’ll also want to make sure you are listed in Google’s blog directory.

Your videos, you’ll want to ensure they have the proper alt tags and you’ll want to submit them to YouTube, Google and Yahoo Video, and the various other video search engines online. StumbleUpon now has a StumbleVideo. Take advantage of every opportunity.

Google Images and Google Photos - same thing, use alt tags and promote the living daylights out of them.

Get yourself listed in Google Local. This will ensure that you are found in the local search as well as in Google Maps. More optimization opportunities for you.

Get the drift? There are other Google services like Google Patents and Google Books that might be useful to you. Google Products and Google Base are both very good verticals. Google Universal is a way for Google to encourage its users to use these verticals more and for marketers to maximize every opportunity available to them to market their websites to Google Universal for maximum results.
