PageRank Is A Good Indicator, But It Isn’t God

PageRank takes into consideration over “500 million variables and 2 billion terms” when finding the most important pages. Google makes it clear that each page casts a vote for another page and this is reflected in the PageRank. Votes from particular sites or pages might have greater value than others. “Important pages receive a higher PageRank and appear at the top of the search results.”

PageRank is a useful indicator of success, but I wouldn’t hang all my hopes and dreams on it. For one thing, you could have a high listing in Google for certain keywords and not have a high PageRank. The traffic you get from the high listing in the SERP is way more powerful than your PR rating, which simply tells you what Google thinks about your reputation.

Of course, reputation is important. What you really want to look for in your PageRank performance is a steady improvement. If you fall backward, say from a PR4 to a PR3, then you want to find out why. Maybe some of your links are broken or Google found you in a link farm. There could be other reasons, but it is likely that Google has discovered something about your website that needs to corrected. Don’t ignore those kinds of indicators.

On the other hand, a high PR doesn’t mean anything either. You can do all the right things right and end up with a PR5 site that gets little traffic and even fewer conversions. In that case, your PR5 is just a poor indicator of success. When it comes to PageRank, put some stock into it, but not too much.
