Too Much Article Marketing Will Kill You
It makes sense that if we want other websites to list your articles and provide a link back to your site, then you should submit your articles to as many sites as possible. This seems like a logical strategy, and there are actually many article submission services available on the Internet that will submit your article to 400 or more article directories. There is a problem with this approach, though. Although you may gain a whole bunch of backlinks to your website, Google will probably flag your article as duplicate content, and it will in turn carry much less value. In other words, as more and more websites post your article its value is being diluted. Plus, important and respected publications don’t want to use content that is posted on another 100 or so websites. One backlink from a respected source with high Page Rank is sometimes worth a 100 backlinks from smaller site with little or no page rank. So, it’s probably a good strategy to only submit your article to 5 or so article directories - the top 5 in Google search will probably do.
I’ve been saying that all along. You don’t want your articles distributed to 40,000 websites so that you can get it published everywhere you can. Instead, focus on just a handful of article directories because by the time your article is published so many places that duplicate content is an issue, it will be outdated anyway and no one else will want to publish it.
To many people don’t understand article marketing. They think more is better. It’s not. It’s actually worse. Because you want links from websites with high PageRank and not a bunch of websites with no reputations at all. In some cases, the websites picking up your article may have bad reputations. There are many websites that will take your articles and publish them as content without your back links in order to maximize their AdSense revenue. If you have your articles published in thousands of directories then you increase your chances of your articles being distributed this way and Google limiting the value of the article to everyone because it is published in too many places. Just stick to 5 or 10 well-known and highly reputable article directories.
The only thing I’d disagree with about this is that the top 5 directories on a Google search are your best bet. Not necessarily. I conducted a search for “article directory” on Google and two of the top five results were directories I would not submit to. I’ve also received poor results from some article directories that some of the best article marketers online recommend. A lot of this has to do with the type of articles you write. If there is a niche directory for your industry, I’d pick that one and then I’d choose from among some of the best general directories. Here is a short list of directories I recommend:
- EzineArticles
- GoArticles
- Article Dashboard
- Buzzle
That’s a short list. There are more reputable article directories online. Do your research and choose the best.
