Negative SEO Could Hurt Us All In The Long Run
Forbes recently published an excellent article on Negative SEO. Really, it’s kind of frightening.
What’s so scary about this is people are willing to brag about it. The perception that you can do whatever you want online and get away with it without any ramifications could soon catch up to all of us. I believe it’s just a matter of time before the courts in the Western industrialized nations is inundated with lawsuits over this type of SEO.
(Source) “I understand the rules of search,” Scott says. “And once you understand the rules, you can use them not just constructively, but also destructively.”
Such is the essence of negative SEO. From Google bowling to click fraud, more and more people are engaging in black hat techniques either to improve their own rankings or to hurt a competitor’s. Doing it to help yourself is one thing, but doing it to hurt someone else is just downright dastardly. And there are people willing to do it.
I believe it’s just a matter of time before an anti-trust or anti-competition lawsuit reaches the highest courts regarding this type of thing. Then, new laws will pass or old laws resurrected to
address this type of wanton activity. When that happens it will hurt all of us. That will be a sad day on the Internet. Until then, I encourage you all to compete but don’t be cut throat about it.
