Web Design and Illuminated Manuscripts

Have you ever seen medieval illuminated manuscripts? Or at least, a reproduction of one? That, for me at least, is the beginnings of information design. It led to books, which led to all kinds of design layout - web design included.

OK, a medieval monk painstakingly painting a religious manuscript is not the same thing as designing a web page. Or is it? Sorry, it is actually. It’s all about communication. It’s all about what’s pleasing to the eye. And it’s all about effectiveness.

Marketing with web design is really no different to how it was in an earlier age. Stop trying to be 21st century, and start thinking just human responses. We haven’t changed - not really. People are people and always have been. Good design is good design. It works best when it encompasses simplicity that works for the majority.

Fancy Flash graphics that sparkle and shake do not, in most cases work. They annoy. Don’t include something that looks earth shattering (to you at least) just because you can. It’s likely that it won’t impress everyone. Or anyone. The best things in life have simplicity as a basis. Learn from that and be the success that you can be.
