What is Podcasting?
A friend asked me the other day, “What is podcasting?” He looked puzzled and seemed to be thinking it might have something to do with fishing. When I told him it was simply making voice recordings that go on a web page, he asked, “Well, why not just call it a recording?”
Actually, it’s not as silly a question as you might think. He wasn’t the first person I’ve encountered who was puzzled by the term. And there in lies a problem. Internet users and creators often make the whole experience far more complicated than it need be. Podcasting is simply the act of making a recording and making it available on the Internet, usually on a blog.
You may be wondering if this is easy to do. Yes, it is! There are free software programs available that make excellent recordings. Most good computers have sound card facilities, so all you need is a microphone and you’re off.
Setting up a podcast on a blog is sheer simplicity itself. If you use Wordpress, and I would advise it, there are plugins that automate most of the process. Just think about it, you could have your own short (or long) recordings on your own blog, on any subject you want. If they re interesting, people will come by to listen. And come back again to listen to the new ones. This is a wonderful marketing tool if used right. And you can do it!
