SEO - It’s What The Search Engines Like.

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is many things to different people. But in general it means optimising a web site in order that the search engines find it more agreeable - that what they see is more in line with what they want to see.

Traditionally, this means that a page should be focussed on a single primary keyword. One or two secondary keywords can also be used, sprinkled throughout the text, but they are not essential. The primary keyword should have a density of between 2% and 5%, though opinions vary on this.

The first third of the content text should contain the primary keyword several times, and the lower two thirds less so. The content text should comprise of at least 500 words. Some say that the primary keyword should be emboldened and italizised, though many feel that this is going too far.

The content text should read naturally with the keywords being forced into the content. Natural text links work better that a list of links to say, affiliate products; the idea is to make the site appear to have information as its primary function, and promotion of products as an incidental function.

This is the traditional view of on page SEO. Other SEO methods includes multiple back links, preferably one way, and using relevant anchor text, and regularly and naturally updated content. SEO is no one thing. It is a number of cohesive things that all together make a web page a more desirable thing in the eyes of the search engines.
