Web 2.0 – the “New” Internet
Many people have been confused by the term, Web 2.0. The implication is that it is a new version of the Internet. In some ways it is, but that’s misleading. It’s really nothing other than a new way of using the Internet, some new technologies, but all the old stuff is still there, if you want it.
Web 2.0 is mostly about social intermingling. It’s about people coming together to decide for themselves what they want to see and hear and read. It’s about people establishing groups where they share a common interest. And it’s about exploring new boundaries with new technologies.
Much of this has been done before, but Web 2.0 takes it to a new level. The rise in popularity of sites such as, YouTube, MySpace and Flickr are testimony to the success of Web 2.0, if any is needed. It has created a whole new marketing opportunity, but one that needs care and attention for success. These are people who know more and think more. Web 2.0 people don’t like being used by no one.
