Web Design - The Good, The Bad And The Truly Awful
Web design is one of those things that everyone and his dog seems to think they can do. OK, there are many people who don’t know the first thing about it, but there are way too many who think they do. Some of them genuinely can turn out excellently designed web sites. But all too often you wish you hadn’t asked.
Design is design regardless which medium you are working in. Some things change, or are only pertinent in certain situations, but by and large, design has rules that should be observed. Why, then, do some so-called web design wannabees break all the rules and think it is still good design? It’s a mystery to me.
I’ve tried hard on occasion to read red text on a dark blue background, or something similar. Why was it designed to be so difficult? My simple advice to anyone thinking of taking up web design is this: look around and take note of the design techniques in print. It may not be exactly what you want online, but it is (usually) good design. Aspire to good design and you won’t go too far wrong.

I agree. Good design is hard to come by. I’ve always looked at website design as akin to newspaper design. The same elements and principles apply.

Good analogy. I never really thought about it but laying our the newspaper I used to publish is a lot like laying out the design of a website.
