Do You Make These Mistakes With Keyword Research?

Keyword research is perhaps the most critical element in the success of a web site. And yet, so many times it is not performed properly. The result is a half-done site, a mediocre so-so site that gets little attention, and that disappoints the owner, leading him or her to believe that keyword research is not all that it is cracked up to be!

It is though. But only when it is done the right way. I suppose the biggest mistake of all in this respect is not using keywords at all. A page has its article, its headline, etc, but there is not obvious primary keyword. There may be one or two good candidates, but not really one that leaps out at you. That’s not going to get you high rankings!

Another problem lies in using inadequate tools. The need for primary and secondary, even tertiary, keywords is fully understood, but the need for a decent research tool is not. They use a tool that provides poor quality, even inaccurate, answers. If you base a web site on poor quality keywords, you will get a mediocre quality web site!

Many people are still using a single primary keyword on a web page. This does work to some degree, but using a theme with several closely related keywords, as well as a few synonyms, works better. It comes over more natural too, and the search engines are increasingly preferring this approach.

Keyword research is not rocket science,. It only requires common sense and a strategic approach. The page must be human-friendly. It’s not just search engine robots that read the page. Humans do too. If the page is obviously too engineered for the search engines, people will know it and click away. Think of the people first when you do your keyword research, and the rest will probably fall into place.
