SEO, The Magnet That Brings On The Search Engine Rankings

Search engine optimisation, or SEO, is all about optimising a web page, or article so that it is seen by the search engines as being more in tune with what they are seeking for higher ranking purposes. Wikipedia probably puts it better by saying that SEO is:

“…the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it “ranks”, the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.”

SEO is used as a marketing strategy that attempts to improve a page’s ranking in order to bring more visitors to that page. If it succeeds in this endeavour, then it is up to the page to convert a percentage of those visitors into buyers. A page that is excellent at converting visitors into buyers, but that has no visitors, will not be very profitable.

When we speak of SEO, we generally mean the usage of techniques and strategies that are approved of by the major search engines. However, there is no legal reason why anyone cannot employ strategies that the search engines frown on, and will impose some penalty for if they catch you doing it. It may be unethical in some cases, but more usually it is not. It is simply a method that most people disapprove of.

However, it is actually easier to work with the search engines in your SEO work, than to work against them. If you give them exactly what they want to see, then you will be rewarded accordingly. This is what most people do when they employ SEO techniques.
