Search Engines, the Light of the Internet
We all use search engines. In the very, very early days there were no search engines. But it quickly became obvious that the fast growing medium that was the World Wide Web needed a means of organising the many pages that were pouring out onto cyberspace, and so search engines were born.
In those early days, ranking for any term was easy. I clearly remember reading that there were an estimated 10 million people using the World Wide Web, and thinking that was a lot of people. Do you think you could have dominated the web for highly competitive terms like mortgage, weight loss, real estate, etc, back then? Of course you could have, and without really trying as well.
But you have to remember that there were also few successful commercial website in operation back then. People didn’t feel safe using credit cards over the web, and besides, the infrastructure to use credit cards online was still in its infancy.
Today there are countless search engines in operation online. The big names like Google, Yahoo and MSN are just the tip of a huge iceberg. There are also search engines that specialise in providing search results for certain things, such a blogs, videos, shopping channels, etc. But it’s still the case that if you have a web site and want good organic traffic, then you need to rank well in one of the major search engines. To do that you need to employ good SEO techniques.
