Web 2.0 - A Revolution In The Making
We’re getting used to the term, Web 2.0, now. But for a time many people were getting alarmed thinking that it was some new kind of technology that they would have to upgrade to, and that the old Internet they had come to love (and hate) so much was becoming obsolete. Not so. In fact, Web 2.0 is more an opportunity to embrace, rather than something you have to get to grips with. Wikipedia explains it like this:
“The phrase Web 2.0 refers to a perceived second-generation of web-based communities and hosted services - such as social-networking sites, wikis and folksonomies - which aim to facilitate collaboration and sharing between users. It became popular following the first O’Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.
Although the term suggests a new version of the World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to Web technical specifications, but to changes in the ways software developers and end-users use the web as a platform. According to Tim O’Reilly, ‘Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.’”
Examples of Web 2.0 sites are YouTube.com and MySpace.com. These are community-based sites that cater to people who want to be socially mixing together. It’s a much more relaxed way of interacting on a global scale that could barely have been imagined just a few short years ago. But does Web 2.0 have any implications for SEO and Internet marketing in general? Yes, it does!
Many people have cashed in on many of the social-networking sites. MySpace.com is a good example. Of course, these sites do have Terms of Service that exclude blatant marketing, but there are often legitimate ways around this that harms no one and satisfies many. The web, or Web 2.0 at least, is finally becoming what it really always should have been, and there are opportunities for all to find.
