Search Engines - More Than Just A Way Of Categorising The Internet

The search engines rule the Internet. If you need to find a web site or a service, or if you are seeking a product you wish to buy, you are likely to start off at one of the search engines. Searches are conducted by entering a keyword, a word that describes best what you wish to find, and clicking the search button. The search engine will return all the results it thinks are relevant to your search.

It didn’t take long in the early days of search engines for webmasters to realise that they would do more business and be more popular if their web sites came up near the top of the search results. A series of trial and error maneuvres soon revealed what worked best, and SEO was born. SEO, or search engine optimisation, is merely the act of making a web page more attractive to the search engines so that they will rank that page closer to the top of the returned results for a certain keyword, or series of keywords.

Needless to say, the art of SEO, for it quickly became an art, became more and more competitive, and more and more difficult to achieve. The search engines for their part have always tried to stay ahead of the game and prevent webmasters manipulating the search results. It has been a constant battle with both sides winning from time toi time. and losing just as often.

But for most people who simply type in a word every so often to find the nearest pizza delivery, or the most popular CD of the moment, all this is neither here nor there. And for those people the search engines are merely organised directories that can give them useful results. And of course, that’s how it was always supposed to be anyway.
