Domain Names And SEO
Most people understand domain names to be synonymous with a web address. It is in a way, but it’s actually more than that. When you purchase the product from a domain name registrar you receive a registered domain name.
The component of a web address that relates to the registered domain name is the hostname. That’s the bit immediately before the dot com, or dot net, or any of the other many top-level domains.
The hostname is tied to the numeric IP address. A web site can be accessed through its IP address, but they are difficult to remember, so we use the hostname for convenience and asthetics instead. Hostnames are restricted to the use of the alphabet letters, a to z, and the numbers, 0 to 9. They can also use a hyphen between words.
Registered domain names can have considerable SEO qualities, if used imaginatively. A web site that targets a particular main keyword that also has the keyword in the domain, will tend to rank faster and higher due to greater relevancy.
Of course, it’s not always possible to register the keyword phrase that is being targeted, but with imagination there is often a work around that is better having just generic domain names.
