Getting Domain Names The Right Way
Can domain names affect your SEO efforts? Yes, it probably can, but perhaps less so than most people think. You can use your main keyword phrase in the domain name – it won’t hurt – but it probably will have a much less overall effect than you imagine.
Keep your domain name short. It’s a myth that all the good short domain have already been taken. Yes, all the good short names you can find in a dictionary have been taken, but that doesn’t stop you combining two words, or thre if need be. You can even make up your own memorable domain name, but don’t go overboard.
Your domain name should be memorable. It should be simple and uncomplicated. Think how you would say it to a friend at a crowded party. If you can convey the domain name accurately in a room with a high noise level, then you pass the test. But if you have to explain underscores or hyphens, then you fail.
Your domain name should be difficult to misspell, for obvious reasons. If it is easy to misspell, then it will be – regularly. And if people can’t find you easily, they’ll give up fast. You should also consider acquiring alternatives to your domain names. For example, if you had the domain name, widgets.com, you might consider getting widget.com, the singular version.
