Web 2.0 - A New Internet?
Everywhere you go on the net these days you will hear about Web 2.0. Is this a reference to a new? A new version of the old, Internet, which was presumably Web 1.0? No, it isn’t. Wikipedia gets it right with this statement:
“In alluding to the version-numbers that commonly designate software upgrades, the phrase “Web 2.0″ hints at an improved form of the World Wide Web.”
That’s it; it hints at an improved and upgraded Web, and that’s not at all wrong either. Web 2.0 is in many ways an improved form of the Internet as it gives back the power to the people who use it.
Stephen Fry, a British comedy actor, describes Web 2.0 rather succinctly when he says it is:
“…an idea in people’s heads rather than a reality. It’s actually an idea that the reciprocity between the user and the provider is what’s emphasized. In other words, genuine interactivity if you like, simply because people can upload as well as download”
In general, Web 2.0 describes the social networking sites such as, del.icio.us, eBay, YouTube, MySpace, Twitter, Tumblr, Wikipedia, Digg, Squidoo, and many, many more with new ones popping up every day.
These are places where people with a common interest hang out and interact together in ways that they choose to. Many people have taken advantage of such places for marketing purposes and have been very successful too. These sites can also be a good source of back links if done properly.
