Podcasting, More Than Just A Strange Word

Some older people get frightened when they hear new buzz words like podcasting. What does it mean? They feel that the world of the Internet is rushing away from them at an alarming rate. It is too in many cases, but podcasting is nothing to be afraid of. It’s simply audio or video files that are made available online.

Wikipedia describes podcasting best when it says that a podcast is:

“…a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers.”

That’s it – no real mystery involved. It’s just a strange name that confuses a bit. And if you need to know where the strange name comes form, here’s Wikipedia again:

“The term “podcast” is a portmanteau of the words “iPod” and “broadcast”, the Apple iPod being the brand of portable media player for which the first podcasting scripts were developed…”

Podcasting can be on any kind of web site, but it is more usually found on blogs. This is mainly because blogs lend themselves to podcasting. In fact, with WordPress there is an excellent plugin that makes podcasting almost easy enough to do blindfold.
