Search Trends in SEO
Search trends can be an extremely useful thing to know when constructing web pages. It can help you decide on which keywords to use based on the trend of the searches. If a chosen keyword has a downward trend it might indicate that there is a reduced popularity trend for that keyword. An increasing trend would likely indicate that a keyword’s popularity is gaining.
Google has a relatively new tool that they offer for free use called Google Trends. It does not tell you how many searches a keyword gets. But it does show a comparison trend between keywords. If a single keyword is entered you will get a single line graph, which will tell you nothing. You need to have several keywords, or two at least, in order to compare their relative trends.
For example, a comparison trend search between the keyword phrases, “cat food” and “dog food” will tell you that “dog food” has almost twice the number of searches than “cat food.” Now, it could be that “cat food” has 10 searches while “dog food” has 20, or it could be that “dog food” has 10,000 searches. But at least you get the relative comparison figures, and that can be extremely useful information.
