The Difference That A Domain Name Can Make

A domain name is a part of a web site’s address. For example, google.com, or yahoo.com. The choice of a domain name for your web site can have a big effect on the success or otherwise of the venture.

Branding, as in Google and Yahoo, and offline as in Coke and Nike, for example, is all very well. But be prepared to work hard at getting the eventual recognition that the big boys have. It doesn’t come easy or soon. It takes years of hard work, as well as lots of capital to create a household brand name that is recognised by most people.

Better by far then to take the simpler route in choosing a domain name. Choose one that is based around your primary keyword. For example, if “dog training” is your primary keyword, then the obvious choice would be a domain of, dogtraining.com. Of course this one was taken years ago so you will have to be a bit more inventive. But you would try to incorporate your keyword in the domain if possible.

The end part of a domain name is also important. The common one is .com, usually referred to as, “dot com.” But there are many others you could use. Most countries in the world have their own top level domain suffix. For example, in the UK it is .co.uk, in Germany it is .de, and in Australia it is .au.

If you are only targetting a local market, then by all means use a local top level domain. But if you are targetting a global market, then it would be best to use the commonly accepted and most familiar .com domain suffix.
