URL Shortening Services You’ll Fall In Love With
Mashable is so cool. This article from two days ago lists 90+ URL shortening websites for any webmaster to use. Believe me, you want to bookmark this page.
I’ve always used Tinyurl. I’ve never really considered anything else. In fact, hardly new there was anything else. Certainly had no idea there were 90 such URL shortening services. But going over the list, I don’t really see a need for some of them. They do the same thing as Tinyurl, and some of them don’t even do that. But here is a list of some of the ones that I thought were most interesting:
- a2n - Allows you to shorten up to 100 URLs at one time. Even Tinyurl can’t do that.
- b65.us - Not really unique in and of itself. It’s just one of several sites on the list that will allow you to password protect and customize your URLs.
- Decent URL - This one is unique. You can purchase a premium account for 7 USD and have the ability to edit URLs, detect broken links, and view click counts. Not too shabby.
- Doiop - Choose your own keyword for the shortened URL. Very useful.
- DwarfURL - If you create a lot of short URLs, you can view your short URL history with this service.
- EZUrl - The most unique aspect of this service is a feature called URL masking.
- Faceto.us - Specifically for shortening the URL to your Facebook profile page.
- Fly2.ws - Create an avatar and link back to your site.
- HotRedirect - Includes URL hiding and path forwarding features.
- LNK.IN - Interestingly, with this service you can create a block of text and it will shorten all the URLs in that block.
- MyURL - You have the ability to protect links to files hosted on certain free file hosting sites.
- Notlong - Create subdomains for your short URLs.
- RubyURL - Cool name. Ruby red website design and you can download a browser bookmarklet to make URL shortening more convenient (several other sites on the list include this feature too).
- ShortURL - Create short URLs with customizable subdomains.
- SHurl - If your site is not workplace friendly, SHurl will display a thumbnail of the website.
- SnipURL - A social site with some unique features, including RSS feeds, URL sharing, and a profile page.
- urlTea - Use it with instant messenger.
- 301url - Search engine friendly redirection.
Again, this is the short list. You can get the full list and links to these sites at Mashable.
