Podcasting - it’s the latest fad for many blogs, but is it worth considering for your blog? First, a brief explanation of podcasting.

In simple terms, a podcast is an audio file that can be downloaded to your computer or MP3 player.

The second consideration is whether or not your blog or web site could benefit from podcasting. Consider the following:

• from what I can determine, podcast’s have no SEO value - you will not get any benefit from a keyword rich podcast file
• podcast files can generate a lot of inbound links so the file name needs keyword enrichment
• the written word generally does not translate well to the spoken so you cannot expect to simply read your posts to create a good audio file
• podcasts can be created using a combination of language and sounds
• podcasts can be syndicated through RSS feeds.

The danger with podcasting is the overuse particularly if you are only transferring your posts into audio. Where podcasts can be valuable is for special events or special promotions. Interviews with individuals who are recognised as authorities in a particular field are particularly valuable. You do not have to look outside your organisation either, if someone has a special skill or knowledge then the interview technique can be used to pass on some of that knowledge.

Podcast’s take time and effort. They are not for everyone so before jumping onto the podcast bandwagon, seriously consider the pro’s and con’s first. Ultimately you have to answer the question - Is Podcasting Viable And Value Adding For My Blog.
