You can develop a positive branding and marketing campaign using the various social media outlets. Select half a dozen posts from each of the major social sites and you could almost guarantee that Apple, MicroSoft or Google will dominate. That is the ultimate in branding. Not one of the companies mentioned have written a word – it is all consumer driven.

Apple and Microsoft no longer really need major advertising campaigns. They only need to release a product to a select few and let them loose on web. Where most people make the mistake is in thinking that the viral nature of this information is based on the branding and marketing of Apple or MicroSoft. No. The information becomes viral because of the branding of the individuals writing the posts.

Over a period of time these individuals have developed a reputation and with that reputation a following. These individuals have developed a tag – a user name, in fact they have developed a brand. The point of this article is that you can as well.

Not only can you develop your own online brand, that brand can be identified with your website or with your business. The key is not to thrust your website or business on the social community, rather you promote yourself and as you promote yourself, you take your website or business with you.

You promote yourself on social media by becoming an active participant in the community and by making intelligent comments and recommendations. Along the way others will encounter your profile more and perhaps add you to their network of friends. If you’ve recommended great content in the past it’s natural to think you will again. The more you add to the community the more influence you will have over that community.

Whilst all this is developing, individuals are viewing and perhaps linking to your profile. Your profile links to your website and of course to your business. As a branding and marketing strategy, the results may be slower than a direct in your face television campaign. The long term results are substantially greater.

By branding and marketing yourself as a reliable and trustworthy contributor, you will be able to promote your own website or business using carefully released articles. They may not be as viral as a front page hit on Digg, but then, with a careful branding and marketing campaign you just never know.
