Content Development Is Easier Than You Think
Content development is not as difficult as some people imagine. What is difficult is trying to establish a niche and a credibility within that niche – and that does start with content development.
For most sites, you have killer content, follow-up content and filler content. It doesn’t matter whether you’re trying to sell products or services or just attract regular readers, it is the quality of the content that is going to makes the sale, deliver the service, build the brand and have the reader coming back for more. To expect to write a killer article every day is a hard ask. What you should be aiming for is a regular supply of ‘killer’ content that is supplemented by ‘follow-on’ content. What you need to avoid is ‘filler’ content.
If you can get one ‘killer’ article at least once per week then so long as the daily follow-up articles provide enough information for the reader, they will be back. Take a look at some of the top blog owners on the internet. They will provide top quality killer article every three or four days. The follow-up articles are often only summaries of old articles; comments on articles from other writers; or just commentaries on a news release. What they do not use is ‘filler’ content.
Your killer article needs to be just that. It may take you the full week to research and write the finished product along with a title that is going to grab everyone’s attention. That one article will set you up for return visitors for the rest of the week. You now to build on that killer article with follow-up content to satisfy their hunger. The follow-up content does not need to be on the same subject. Your follow-up content needs to build on your image, your brand, your product or on the information from the ‘killer’ article.
Filler content is just that. It is used to fill spaces when you run out of something to say – and it show. Filler content includes reprinting old articles without putting a new angle on them; reprinting flyers or brochures; reprinting someone else’s article without any commentary or reason to publish; reprinting news releases that are already in the public domain (including your own); and publishing stories about your children or the weather or anything else trivial.
Content development is easier than you think, provide regular killer articles with killer titles. Follow that with quality follow-up articles and you will build a steady stream of readers. Allow your content development to be polluted by filler articles and your readers will click away just as quickly.
