Click fraud is the process of clicking on ads to collect revenue, not to visit a site and certainly not to stay and purchase. Click fraud is generally undertaken by publishers or their cohorts with the intent to increase their revenue. There have also been instances where competitors have arranged to click on ads. Their aim is to use up your advertising budget with useless click thereby reducing your sales. There have been a small number of individuals who have organised click fraud campaigns on competitive sites with the aim of getting that site banned from Adsense or other advertisers.

The simple answer is very little. PPC campaigns are always going to draw interest from those intent on making a quick couple of quid. Some experts believe that, like shoplifting, you need to include it in your budgets. One of the few methods that can be used to minimise click fraud in PPC campaigns is to use advertisers such as Google who have developed click fraud detection programs. Google are severe on publishers suspected of being involved in click fraud so you could expect some level of protection.
PPC click fraud is endemic within the online advertising industry. When designing a PPC campaign you do need to allow for a certain level of click fraud no matter how good the click fraud detection used. Alternatively you could select a different type of advertising campaign.
