Link Building Scotland To The World
I get seemingly strange questions in this industry at times and this one relates to link building and whether or not you should be seeking out links from within your geographic area or from outside.
There is no argument that link building is the most important aspect in any optimisation campaign. But should those links be local or world wide? My short answer is sol long as you have relevant links then really it does not matter and you should look for a balance.
My long answer is simple – one size does not fit all. It really does depend on your site, your TLD, and your target audience. Having said that, if the link is from a relevant site then a link is a link. There are obvious benefits to having links from local sites where the site compliments your business. However if you are dealing with a world wide market then sites from anywhere that compliment your business are acceptable.
The real issue is not so much the origin (geographically) but the value of the link. How relevant is the link and just as importantly, how natural is it and where is linking to. The best value links come from sources that are relevant, have a decent PR (higher than your own) and link from content through to a content page using a relevant keyword.
Search engines use links to determine a pages importance. The more links to a particular page, the more important that page becomes. Taking this one step further, the more important the page that links in is, the more important the receiving page becomes. Link juice can then be made to flow through the site.
If you receive an optimised link from a high ranking site that links into one of your pages, and that page links on to other pages within your site, the juice will flow through like a serious of veins.
When link building your site the most important factors are the relevance of the site linking in, where they link to, and what keywords they use to create that link. Link building is a ‘one size fits all’ in this case. Where they link from geographically? I go back to my short answer. Balance. Geographically, Scotland is only a small piece of the overall map. Think relevance first, value second, and geography last.
We can link Scotland to the rest of the world, it is much better if the rest of the worlds link building leads straight to Scotland.
