E-mail Marketing – The Number 1 Killer Of All Campaigns
E-mail marketing is one of the most popular forms of marketing with almost every site having some form of sign up form. It can often be difficult getting someone to actually put themselves onto a list to accept what some call junk mail. An even bigger killer of campaigns is the black list.
To avoid the black list you need to do two things. The first is to ensure that your prospects are willing to receive mail and the second is to remove prospects from the database if your e-mail marketing information bounces back unread.
Add Me To Your White List
The first step is to make sure your prospects have either added your email address to their whitelist – normally just adding you as a contact will suffice. To achieve this you need to include a very prominent message after they have signed up that advises them how to do it.
The second step is to use the double opt in method. Once they fill in their email details, send them confirmation email. They will only then be added to the data base once they have confirmed their subscription.
There are times when the prospect really does want to sign up, for example, to receive newsletters. Make sure you have the whitelist message from step one very clear on the sign up page followed by instructions on how to resend the sign up email if they failed to receive the first one.
How To Avoid The Blacklist
If you send email marketing campaigns and you are not on the whitelist, your email will bounce back with a do not resend type message. These emails generally come from the ISP as they are the ones who blocked your email.
If you fail to remove the recipient from the data base and continue to send emails, your email address may get black listed. This will have the effect of preventing you from emailing anyone through that ISP – even if they want you too.
E-mail marketing is not just what you send, or how you send it. You have to manage your data base as well to ensure that only those who want to receive your mailings – do so.
