Use Your Logs For Keyword Research
One of the most valuable tools for keyword research is sitting at your fingertips, you just need to do a little digging. Your web logs can be a valuable mine of resources as they show which keywords were used to find your site.
Careful analysis of this data can help you find new keywords that you may not have thought of before, and the beauty of it all is that these are words that have found your site without any work by you. Keyword research like this is simple and straight forward.
You have several choices. You can take the newfound keywords and create keyword content to increase the number of indexed pages, or you can go back through your existing pages, particularly the pages that were found, and increase the keyword ratio for those pages. Your keyword research should pay particular attention to why these keywords were used if possible and why they found your pages.
It can often be the case that searches were looking for answers to questions and, although your site may have been down the list in the SERP’s, they though you could provide the answers. If your content does not already provide answers then should provide a few pages that do answer these queries. It can be hit and miss trying to determine exactly what they were searching for, however if you can provide some generalised answers with a an option to ask questions, you may be surprised at the results.
Keyword research doesn’t need to be done through expensive tools, it can be done from your own servers very effectively. Google analytics can also be a great keyword research tool when it comes to determining what keywords have been used to find your pages.
