Unsolicited Domain Names Renewal Request In Scotland

From time to time we notice unsolicited renewal notices doing the rounds here in Scotland. We do advise caution. They often look like legitimate notices sometimes claiming to represent, or to have taken over, legitimate domain names registrars.

There are some unscrupulous individuals who claim to have received an application to register a domain name but have found that it is registered in your name – you need to confirm your details to prevent the completion of registration.

Domain names registration does not work that way. Once a name is registered, it stays registered until the registration expires. The only time ownership details change is when the domain name is sold or otherwise passed on.

The notices are intended to mislead and deceive owners into renewing their domain names or obtaining their credit card details. A simple rule of thumb – your domain name is already registered so check with the body that registered your domain name before doing anything else.

Under no circumstances send any credit card or personal details until you have checked with your registrar. They will normally inform you of your re-registration date about three months before it is due for renewal.

You need to be vigilant at all times when it comes to online scams particularly when it comes to your domain name and of course, your own personal information.
