Who Is Your Web Design Really For?
One of the frustrating aspects of web design is dealing with a web site owner. That statement probably sounds strange since web site owners are the people who hire web designers to create their sites.
The problem is, many of these owners aren’t prepared to hand a brief to a designer and leave it to them. It is a web site owners right to have a web site designed the way they want it, however that can often conflict with both good design practices and SEO requirements.
Some web sites seem to be designed for the web site owner and not for the user. Users find the sites difficult to navigate, the information hard to find, and, if it is a sales site, the checkout and payment process quite painful. These sites are designed for the owner. It is probably aesthetically pleasing and they can update, add and remove items when required.
Over a period of time the web site owner will complain that sales are low, visitor numbers are low or that bounce rates are high. I wonder why?
Web design should be undertaken from the perspective of the user, your visitor. They are your potential customers and should be given the easiest journey possible from when they arrive to the final payment page. Along the way they should be able to find the information they are seeking and, where necessary, help or FAQ files.
When you have a web site created - who is it created for, you or your visitor. Web design is the very start of either a successful or not so successful future.
