Domain Names: The Dot Me Saga
There has been a lot written about the new dot me (.me) domain names with one writer suggesting you ‘get in quick to grab your domain name before it’s gone’. The problem is, with so many top level domains now available it would be difficult, and expensive, to register all of them.
I accept that some TLD’s could be good to acquire however the internet public is becoming sophisticated so clever use of TLD’s may no longer be effective. del.icio.us is now moving away from their clever use of a domain name and will now be known as delicious.com. Domain names do need to be relevant to the industry, however the trade in domain names is such that country codes mean little now.
The .me TLD is assigned to Montenegro. Other ccTLD’s include .tv – Tuvalu; .fm – Federated States of Micronesia; .am – Armenia; .cd – congo.
The list goes on. You can however see how these ccTLD’s could be used cleverly in domain names. the .me saga saw the same domain names sold several times over and the whole system crashing and burning. In the meantime, all good domain names disappeared quite quickly.
Here in Scotland, whilst a clever use of ccTLD domain name may sound like a good idea, the reality often is to stick with your local TLD and make use of your business name or brand.
