Successful Sites Start With Good Domain Names
But What Makes For Good A Domain Name?
DailyBlogTips delivered their verdict on what makes a good domain name:
1. is short
Define short? Domain names are relative and whilst a short name is easy to remember (see point 2), longer names can be just as memorable. If you can satisfy points 2 to 6 then domain length is less of an issue.
2. is easy to remember
For sites that are going to be branded, this is essential. The domain name should be one that can be typed in quickly with little chance for error.
3. is easy to spell
Put together with point 2, being easy to remember means it will be easy to spell and easy to type.
4. is descriptive or brandable
Descriptive perhaps, brandable definitely. If your domain name is easy to spell and memorable it is going to be brandable. People remember brand names easily and often develop a brand loyalty.
5. does not contain hyphens and numbers
Hyphens have become counter productive when it comes to SEO. Numbers can be useful if it’s part of the product or brand. Numbers that look like a series make the domain look second best (or worse).
6. has a .com extension
This is debatable and here in Scotland like the rest of the UK, the .co.uk can be a much better option for local traders. If you are an international trader then the .com could make sense. It should be remembered, this can effect your local search placement.
The post at DailyBlogTips goes into a lot more detail including statistics that do back up his arguments. However, domain names are relative to the type of business and the business owners aims and ambitions.
Domain names are the starting point for a successful online business. Think your domain name through very carefully. Once you have settled on it and have it up and running, you can’t change it.
