Let Google Suggest A Search Query
After many months, perhaps years, Google have finally implemented their search autofill feature. They have released it across all data centers simultaneously.
If you have spent hours optimizing for misspelled words, you may find traffic in the future dropping off because of this new feature. As you begin to type in your search query, a drop down box appears with suggestions to auto complete the search query.
Features such as this have been common on other software applications and on Yahoo!. How searchers take to it will be interesting. As I mentioned, it will test the patience of site owners who have included misspelled words into the keyword lists.
One aspect that SEO specialists and site owners may find interesting is the additional data included with the search suggestion. Google list the number of pages found for each of the suggestions. This is possibly designed to help the searcher find the most appropriate search term.
The number of pages found may be a quick way to identify long tail search terms with little competition that you could include in your keyword lists. The less competition, the better the chance of appearing in the first pages of the search results.
It will be interesting to see how users take to the auto complete feature.
