Optimizing Documents For Search Results

Every page and every document that you place online for public viewing should be optimized to appear in the search results. We work hard on optimizing pages, making sure they have the right keyword balance and placement; meta tags are well written; and titles and url’s optimized with keywords. The majority of the time we will publish and make available documents such as PDF files and MS Office type files – but we forget to optimize them as well.

Most modern word processors, spreadsheets and presentation packages have the option of including meta style information. This can often be accessed through the document information section of the package you are using.

This section normally includes an area to enter the authors name; appropriate keywords; a description; and often a category. You can of course give the document any name you wish.

When filling out these sections, think SEO. Treat each section like a web pages meta tags. Keywords should be appropriate; the description should sell the document as it may be used in search results; and the file and document name should be keyword optimized.

By optimizing these documents correctly, you can help them rank well and appear in the search results for those keywords. Search results, if high enough, result in increases in traffic and with it, more sales or conversions. If you publish documents on the web, be sure to optimize them.
