Google Suggests Social Media

In the final part of the Google post on links, they offer some advice on inbound links. There is little in the way of new advice in what they have to say.

Content, content, and more content is the first piece of advice. Google of course have long pushed the concept of content. Be interesting, be a teacher and using video are all part of their advice on content.

Inbound links? Let them occur naturally as part of an editorial process. By editorial they are talking more about links with content rather than site wide links in footers or sidebars.

What is interesting is their recommendation to be social. To quote from Google:

Participate in the community surrounding your industry—social media, blog comments, user reviews.

Blog comments, user reviews and being involved in the social media. There has been a lot of talk in recent months of Google paying more attention to social media, including social bookmarking, to get an indication as to how individuals interact. With social bookmarking, it will be interesting to see if Google makes some determination surrounding those individuals who bookmark their own pages.

This series is really just a confirmation of what has already been said for by others. It wont change the way people do things, they will still spam and they will still buy links without thinking them through.

True to their own guidelines, Google are continuing to develop content, content and still more content. Unfortunately we are none the wiser for it. Google will rank well for it though.
