Using Analytics To Fine Tune Your Web Site

There are a number of web analytic programs around, some free and some that are quite expensive. Google offer their own web analytics program called Google Analytics. While fairly basic it can offer quite a bit of information that can help you to fine tune your websites.

Some of the information provided that is useful includes daily visitors (not always accurate), the number of visitors from search engines, and the keywords used to find your website.

It is the later two that of utmost importance. Looking at the keywords first, whilst you may be optimizing for a for a particular keyword, searches may be finding you using a different keyword. This can tell you one of two things. Either you are using the wrong keywords or you have not optimized your site effectively for the keywords you do want to target.

If you really do need to target specific keywords then you will need to look at your SEO strategies and try to tighten up on those specific keywords. This may require more inbound links, on-page optimization, or better site architecture.

On the other hand, it is quite possible that, whilst the keywords you have targeted where relevant in the past, they may not be now. It could also be that you have simply made a poor call when deciding on your keywords. Obviously, you need to target words or phrases that searchers are using, otherwise you may be missing a lot of traffic.

Google Analytics can also be broken down to show you which search engines the traffic came from, how long they stayed and what other pages they have visited. This can help you refine your search optimization and over time, increase your traffic.
