Goodbye SEO, Hello Social Marketing – I Think Not!
Everywhere I look I see recommendations to jump into social marketing like never before. That 2009 will be the year of social marketing (I seem to remember reading that 2008 would be the year for social marketing – about this time last year as well). People are even talking about reducing their SEO efforts and concentrating on the social.
Why? Rumour has it that Google will eventually take social factors into account more and links less when determining rankings.
I have two initial thoughts on that rationale. One – notice the word eventually – what about the now. Second – I repeat a constant theme here, Google is not the only search engine in town.
The long term reality is that social marketing is important and you should start getting involved. There is however plenty of time to ease your way in and to get a feel for social marketing. SEO is still going to be the single most important activity to gain good SERP outcomes. Social marketing should be considered jointly as part SEO and part marketing, in other words, social marketing is a part of your SEO, not the other way around.
If you decide to employ a professional social marketer, they need to be engaged under that proviso. This ensures your SEO maintains its white hat approach and your business maintains its reputation.
Hello social marketing – let me introduce you to SEO.
