The Problem With Search Engine Marketing
Search engine marketing is the cornerstone of many SEO programs. The problems is, even the search engines get it wrong. Most people will have heard of the problems that Google experienced lately. If you haven’t, in a nutshell, almost all search results from Google came with the message that “this site may harm your computer” – even links to Google’s own pages came with that warning.
The problem is said to be human error and it no doubt was and it didn’t take too long for the problem to be rectified. I listened with interest to one radio commentator who basically shrug his shoulders and said, “what do you expect – it’s a free service – there’s nothing you can do about it”.
He is wrong and yet he is right. Obviously we cannot do anything about any glitch in any of the search engines. When can however learn from this type of problem. The biggest lesson is one of the most obvious when it comes to marketing – ‘never put all your eggs in one basket’.
When it comes to online marketing, your need to be using several different approaches. Social marketing is another where we often make the mistake of targeting the one outlet. A blended multi faceted approach is required where social marketing is delivered through a variety of sites while your search engine marketing targets all the major search engines.
Using a multi pronged approach means a problem in one does not bring everything to a stop. Search engine marketing is still going to be the number one marketing tactic by most website owners – just remember, search engine marketing is not the only form of marketing available.
